Here are some fun ways to teach your children using the book,
"Skyler C. Gull."
Skyler C. Gull's Sea of Learning
1. "Skyler C. Gull" is full of many puns and
clever plays on words, such as the  one on
the page where Skyler pays the cashier a
sand dollar. Explain to your children what a
pun is, and share other puns in the book
with them. Help them make up some of their
own.

2. Use the book to teach children about the
tide. Tell them about the high tide and the
low tide. Point out to them what happened
in the book with the tide.

3. Pick different parts of speech -- nouns,
verbs, adjectives -- in the book and teach
your children about them.
4. Don't wait to go to the beach to teach your kids about seagulls. Point out to
your kids that Skyler is a seagull. Then, go to the library or look online for
information about seagulls and other animals at the beach and teach your kids
about them.

5. Have your kids make up their own story about Skyler.

6. Encourage your kids to draw a sand castle on a piece of paper.

7. Have your children draw Skyler and the other characters in the book.

8. Talk to your kids about the beach, using the book as a starting point.

9. Ask your kids what they would have done if they would have been in Skyler's
situation. What would they have done if their castle disappeared? How would they
have solved Skyler's problem?

10. In the book, Skyler does the Seagull Shuffle. Play some beach music and
have your kids do the Seagull Shuffle.
